Data transmission with OPC UA makes FTP unnecessary

Modern security standards require end-to-end encryption, which old standards such as FTP cannot offer. Consequently, in addition to data access and alarms & conditions, the OPA server of Bachmann’s M200 controller now also offers file transfer in accordance with chapter 20 of the OPC UA standard. Potential non-secure use of an FTP client that does not recognize login and requires encryption has now become unnecessary.

Data transmission by means of OPA UA server has been seamlessly integrated into the security concept of the Bachmann controller. In this regard, login of the OPC client on the controller determines the the user-dependent access rights to process data. However, in addition the system also offers appropriate extensions for data access, in order to prescribe the read and right permission to the storage media of the controller on a user-specific basis.

This functionality also applies to OPC UA: When browsing the user sees only files to which he has at least the read permission. On the other hand, the user needs write access to the file system in order to change or copy files.
