ATS (Ancona – Italy) the company specializes in the development and implementation of complete automated lines, including electrical panels, machine boards and software. With around 30 employees, ATS recently started a project to develop an assembly machine for drawer runners, a task that demands high precision and efficiency. The machine had to automatically assemble drawer slides by inserting three different parts to obtain the final product without human intervention. Given the high demand for drawer slides, ATS was looking for a solution that could significantly increase production while ensuring reliability and ease of use. Delta advanced automation technology was ideally suited to the challenge.
Innovative automation with Delta’s SCARA and AX-8 PC-based motion controller
The collaboration between Delta and ATS began about six months prior to the ramp-up phase. Delta wanted ATS, already familiar with Delta’s extensive product range, to test the SCARA robotic solution.
Delta’s comprehensive automation package included Ethernet switches (DVS-008), human machine interfaces (DOP-110), AX-816 PC-based motion controllers, ASDA-B3 and ASDA-A2 series servo drive systems (ASD-B3A-E and ASD-A2E), SCARA robots (DRS40 for end soldering and DRS60 for drawing), and AC motor drives (MS300). These components formed the integrated control system architecture of the assembly machine, enabling seamless and efficient operation.
Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Seamless Integration
The introduction of Delta’s SCARA robots was a significant milestone as it was ATS’ first experience with Delta robotic automation. The biggest challenge was getting the customer used to the new system and demonstrating its effectiveness in real time. Delta project manager and a team of on-site application engineers provided extensive training to ensure the ATS team was comfortable with the new technology.
Remarkable Results and Increased Production Efficiency
The results of this collaboration have been impressive: ATS has seen a 40% increase in production efficiency. The AX-816 controller’s ability to coordinate multiple robots simultaneously has further streamlined the assembly process, reducing cycle times and increasing overall productivity.
The AX-816 controller’s easy programming and remote connection capabilities have been particularly beneficial; ATS can now provide remote diagnostics and support, minimizing downtime and quickly resolving any issues that arise.
