With the availability of PROFIdrive basic technology based on source code, there is now another way to integrate PROFIdrive in drives. PI (PROFIBUS & PROFINET International) welcomes the new basic technology as an important contribution toward the widespread use of drives with PROFIBUS and PROFINET in applications.
The PROFIdrive drive profile defines a uniform, vendor-neutral interface and covers the entire range from simple frequency converters to high-end servo drives. Precertified source code, developed by the PROFIdrive Community Project and available free of charge, enables easy and cost-effective implementation of the PROFIdrive interface.
The Industrial NETworx Community is responsible for maintaining the source code. It also supports interested companies in integrating the source code and provides a platform for exchanging information and experience. A live 3-D model for this based on PROFINET with IRT and using Jenny Science axes can be seen at the PI Booth at SPS/IPC/Drives (Hall 6, Booth 210). Jenny Science, a medium-sized company located in Switzerland, used the PROFIdrive source code and the PROFIdrive implementation guide to react very quickly to customer requirements and equip its drives with a PROFIdrive interface. Here, an isochronous real-time (IRT) interface and PROFIdrive application class 4 were implemented for high-end motion control applications and PROFIdrive application classes 3 and 1 were additionally implemented for less complex positioning tasks. This gives PROFINET users an easy way to control compact linear motor axes.
