With the Expert Days on Robotic Material Removal on October 26 and 27, 2022, SCHUNK revived its established event series with a new topic. The focus of the international expert platform was on robot-assisted machining. More than 70 specialists from Europe came together in Brackenheim-Hausen to exchange ideas on deburring, grinding, or polishing processes and to network for future tasks.

Automation continues to be one of the megatrends in modern manufacturing. Robot-assisted machining in particular has a key role to play here: Production potentials must be exploited, contributions made to increasing efficiency, and the shortage of skilled workers counteracted. In this context, this year’s Expert Days offered a wide-ranging transfer of know-how on the subject of robotic material removal, the future focus of the event series. At the same time, the expert platform continues to act as the initial and driving force of a network: SCHUNK intends to re-establish the tried-and-tested series of events as a platform for regular exchange after the two-year break.

Drivers for international networking

With expert presentations, best practice examples, and an accompanying trade exhibition, this year’s Expert Days addressed all stakeholders – from tool, component, and abrasive manufacturers to integrators, software providers, and robot experts. Questions were discussed such as: Can cobots be used for grinding? What are the possibilities for deburring with non-rigid robots? What are the results of grinding with a vision system for edge and surface detection? 14 lectures were part of the packed agenda. “Fantastic presentations from a diverse field of speakers,” is how Karl Ericsson from automation specialist Svenska Elektrod praised the program. Thomas Magnussen from SHL, expert for surface treatment, also draws a positive conclusion: “Two exciting days and constructive discussions.”

Both days of the event were also extensively used to form a partner network and to initiate exchange beyond the Expert Days 2022. As a platform for a newly forming community, SCHUNK sees the event as a driver for international networking on robot-assisted machining. In conclusion Product Sales Manager Daniel Mayer from SCHUNK, who led the event as moderator, emphasizes: “It is inspiring to get different perspectives on the same topic and to develop joint approaches to solutions from them.”

Next year’s Expert Days on Robotic Material Removal will again be a networking event. SCHUNK will announce the exact date for 2023 in time.
