With TwinCAT PLC++, Beckhoff can significantly increase the performance of its automation technology. Both engineering and runtime can be accelerated while maintaining the well-known TwinCAT advantages of consistent integration, compatibility and openness. Combined with easy switching and preservation of existing TwinCAT functions, this creates a significant added value “Plus Plus” for the user.

TwinCAT PLC++ is a completely new development by Beckhoff and fits seamlessly into the existing TwinCAT ecosystem. TwinCAT PLC++ is also based on the language described in IEC 61131-3. Modern compiler technology and new architectures provide significant improvements in engineering and runtime performance. While well-known and proven features remain intact, central components of the development environment, such as the editor and compiler, have been redeveloped based on the IT model. Furthermore, Beckhoff particularly focused on the specific needs of users and highlighted the possibility of implementing continuous integration and continuous deployment in accordance with DevOps principles.

TwinCAT PLC++ offers significant performance advantages in terms of execution times. Compared to the previous TwinCAT PLC, the same control code can be executed up to 1.5 times faster at runtime with TwinCAT PLC++. It is worth noting that the new compiler now allows this control code to be further optimized in terms of execution time. This option, already known in the IT industry, further significantly increases execution speed. Industrial PCs with less computing power may be sufficient for today’s machine controls, which results in reduced hardware costs. If the hardware platform remains unchanged, the freed up computer resources can be used to implement more control functions or to minimize cycle times and increase machine productivity.

From an engineering point of view, TwinCAT PLC++ shortens lead times from control development through to commissioning and the entire machine life cycle. This is achieved by reducing uptime through faster project load times and improved translation processes. Project lead times are minimized, resulting in significant cost savings and allowing new machines and systems to be brought to market more quickly.
